Ever wondered what it’s like to study medicine at Cambridge University?
Top academics and subject specialists welcome Year 12 students to Medicine Taster Day

On 26 April, the College welcomed over 100 Year 12 students to its 2025 Medicine Taster Day. The jam-packed itinerary featured top academics and subject specialists, who delivered undergraduate level lectures in Anatomy, Clinical Research, Neurobiology and Human Behaviour, Public Health and Biochemistry. The Medicine Taster Day is part of the College’s She Talks Science programme, an outreach initiative that aims to provide life-changing opportunities and maximise the potential of high-performing young women with an interest in STEM. Addressing the gender gap that still exists in STEM education, research and careers, the free programme provides the perfect forum for students to explore their areas of interest and learn about applying to study at Cambridge.
Matt Diston, Head of Access and Student Recruitment, explains:
“With increasing numbers of brilliant women applying to take part in She Talks Science every year, we were delighted to welcome such an outstanding, engaged and enthusiastic group of students to this year’s Medicine event and are already working on increasing capacity for next year as we keep up with demand.â€

"At the end of the day I had much more confidence to apply to Cambridge and it was also great to hear the honest and varied insights from current students."
"The student ambassadors were really friendly and made me feel like I really belong there."
College Fellow Dr Madeleine Lameris took part in the taster day and said:
“As a Clinical Director of Studies at MEC, and a senior member of faculty at the School of Clinical Medicine in Cambridge, I attended the medicine taster day with the aim of giving our prospective students an idea of how the course runs, and where people like me fit into it. The 6-year programme, and the combination of colleges, clinical school, tutorials and placements can feel complicated and confusing at times. The taster day is an opportunity to understand that, for our students, the college provides a thread that weaves throughout the whole programme and beyond into their clinical years. It is a privilege to be in a room with so much potential and I look forward to meeting some of them again!â€
After lunch in the College’s beautiful Dome Dining Hall, students were able to hear from and speak to current students gaining real-life insights into their experiences of studying Medicine at Cambridge. Guided tours around the College buildings and grounds also gave students a really authentic feel for College life.
Dr Andrew Bond, Director of Admissions for STEM subjects, gave helpful advice on the application process to Cambridge University, highlighting the importance of super-curricular exploration – free lectures, TED talks, webinars, articles – to effectively demonstrate passion and interest for a subject.
