As an undergraduate, Deborah took great pleasure in studying English Literature at New Hall/°Ç¸ç³Ô¹Ï. A year in India teaching under the auspices of Voluntary Service Overseas in India resulted in a shift to social anthropology, a PhD on religious change in urban Odisha and then 8 years as Assistant Curator of the ethnographic collections at Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.  From there her career took her to the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Indian and Asian Departments (1983-2004), and then to the Courtauld Institute of Art, where she was Märit Rausing Director until 2023. She was made CBE in 2023. She continues to work with museums, art and anthropological trusts and foundations in India and the UK.
