Beth Fisher
Beth Fisher is known for her large-scale figurative drawings about family and the human life-cycle. She completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the United States (University of Wisconsin) and Britain in the 1960s and 70s, before settling in Glasgow in 1971. Shortly afterwards, her series ‘In the Canopy’ (1974–87) focused on family life, followed by ‘The Legacy’ series from 1993 which confronted her experience of both daughters leaving home for further education. The next series, ‘Letting Go’, responds to the physical ageing process and marriage, in contrast to their daughters’ growing independence and sexuality (2014). Alongside oil painting, printmaking is another important aspect of Fisher’s practice. She co-founded the Glasgow Print Studio in 1972, an artist-led initiative that provided accessible facilities and a gallery space for printers, before working at Peacock Visual Arts – a printmaking workshop in Aberdeen – from 1976 to c.1992. Fisher was the first woman to be elected to the membership category of ‘Printmaker’ (1989) at the Scottish Royal Academy.
