Isabel Steinthal was a Jewish painter and textile artist known for her fantasy scenes, Welsh landscapes, and later abstract patterned designs. The Steinthal family relocated from Germany to Manchester in 1809. Here, they established a branch of the family’s textile-trading business. Steinthal & Co Ltd traded mainly in cotton and flourished for more than a century.   Alongside herself, there were three painters in her immediate family – her father, mother, and sister. Subjects of initial interest to Steinthal were fantasy scenes populated by mysterious dancing figures. Towards the end of her life, and perhaps responding to modernism in the visual arts, she turned to abstraction. She lived in North Wales.
