June Wayne
June Wayne was an American printmaker, tapestry designer, painter and teacher who was instrumental in revitalising lithography and transforming printmaking in America.
Wayne moved to Los Angeles in the 1940s, a time when the printmaking technique of lithography was primarily used for posters and not considered a serious art form.
She envisioned greater potential for the medium and in 1970 founded the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in California, expressing that through this institution she was, “ensuring the future of an art form I love.†Through printmaking she explored subjects which fascinated her including DNA, scientiï¬c progress, the wonders of space, tidal waves and natural resources, such as metals and stones which are involved in the lithography process.
