New-Zealand born violinist Penelope Spencer is one of the leading baroque violinists of her generation. In 1998 she graduated with the highest performance diploma - “Uitvoerende Musicus” cum Laudae - from Utrecht and The Hague conservatories
She lived in the Netherlands for 10 years, working and touring internationally with the leading figures of the Early Music movement such as Gustav Leonhardt, Francois Fernandez, William Christie and the Kuijken brothers.
In 2000, Penelope joined the English Baroque Soloists, directed by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and participated that year in over 80 concerts and CD recordings across Europe and in the United States, comprising a landmark project to perform and record all of Bach’s 200 cantatas in one year. She moved to the UK in 2001.
In 2004 she founded Realm of Music, a successful concert series aimed at bringing baroque music to a wider audience where listening guides were specifically developed to help new audiences enjoy the performances. Her passion for bringing new audiences to baroque music has developed further in recent years through collaborations with folk-rock legend Richard Thompson and the popular celtic piper Carlos Nunez and the Musicians of the Globe.
In 2007, Penelope was invited to become the concertmaster (principal violin) of the New London Consort and tours internationally on a regular basis, as both soloist and concertmaster, performing at the major festivals and concert halls worldwide.
James Mayhew is one of the foremost children’s author/illustrators in the UK.
His first children’s book, Katie’s Picture Show, was published in 1989 and has been firmly in print ever since. Many more “Katie” titles have followed and the best-selling series can now be found in museums and galleries all over the world, from the Met in New York, to the Uffizi in Florence, the Louvre in Paris, and beyond.
James is also the creator of the much-loved Ella Bella Ballerina series and many other books, including Koshka’s Tales, Miranda the Explorer and Boy.
Alongside his work in publishing, James has devised and performed in a hugely successful series of concerts for children, combining live classical music, storytelling and art created live on stage. From Peter and the Wolf, to Scheherazade, his unique way of bringing music to life in paint has received outstanding reviews. James now works internationally as an animateur with many different orchestras and musicians.
In 2013 he was invited to be the Guest Director of the Cheltenham Music Festival, for whom he designed a much acclaimed production of Britten’s children’s opera Noye’s Fludde, which was performed in Tewkesbury Abbey with a cast of 200 children to celebrate the composer’s centenary. As an ambassador for art and music for children he engages in many wide reaching projects in schools with children from all backgrounds.
Lucy Bending has worked in music management for twenty years. Ten of these years were spent with Gabrieli Consort & Players, gaining high levels of expertise in all aspects of music management, marketing and orchestral touring. Lucy now runs her own management company, undertaking various projects both large and small.
Since 2008, Lucy’s main role has been as Manager for Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music. In this post she is responsible for all the logistics involved in bringing musicians from around the world to perform at the Festival: booking transport and accommodation, organising Certificates of Sponsorship and visas, producing and managing a £250,000 budget, contracting the artists, producing schedules for each day, overseeing concert managers, and being the key liaison person between all Festival team members, venues and sponsors.
In addition Lucy was asked in 2010 to manage a series of concerts for the Division Lobby a group ran by lutenist Paula Chateauneuf which was funded by a one-off academic grant, and since 2012 she has been managing a professional concert series in a local school.
After graduating from the University of East Anglia with a master of music degree, Jonathan initially joined The Decca Record Company as an audio editor. Within three years he progressed to the Location Department where he soon established himself as a senior engineer. This involved taking responsibility for projects that ranged from solo recitals to grand opera productions, live events, and video productions. On several occasions he also worked as producer.
Over ten years working at this level has given Jonathan a vast amount of experience with over 150 projects to his name. It has also enabled him to develop long standing relationships with many of the world’s finest artists including Bernard Haitink, Carlos Kleiber, Cecilia Bartoli, Sir Georg Solti, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Bryn Terfel, Roberto Alagna, Angela Gheorghiou, Kiri Te Kanawa, Al Jarreau, Maxim Vengerov, Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, NHK Orchestra, and many others.
Jonathan is currently in high demand as an engineer, especially for larger scale productions that involve video and film aspects. These projects are often in live situations and encompass classical, crossover, contemporary, and pop styles. In November 1997 Jonathan left Decca, and with a colleague Neil Hutchinson, formed an independent recording facilities company - Classic Sound Ltd.
Andreas Kaempf is head of Soundience, a management consultancy that focuses on the development and application of leading-edge quantitative models to help solve complex business problems. In recent years, Andreas has been involved in diverse projects across a broad range of industries, including telecommunications, the legal profession, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, energy, financial services, and defence. Much of his work has been in the field of system dynamics, but he has also applied social network analysis, option pricing theory, agent-based simulation, and other approaches. Andreas builds custom software (mostly web based) to make some of these approaches easier to use and more insightful.
Soundience has been involved in numerous classical music projects, including outreach strategy for the Philharmonia Orchestra, organizational and fundraising strategies for the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra, and a media strategy project for the Yehudi Menuhin School. Much of his work involves developing interactive models that run over the web, which is highly relevant to delivering content to new audiences through the use of technology.
Prior to starting Soundience, Andreas worked for four years with McKinsey & Company in London as a member of their Global Strategy and Business Dynamics practices. Before that, he worked with Pugh-Roberts Associates in Cambridge, Massachusetts (now part of PA Consulting Group), a leader in business simulation modelling. He started his career with nine years at Air Canada, leading the development of information systems in the technical operations area. Andreas holds an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan School of Management) and a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University.
