The Brown Shawl 2
In The Brown Shawl 2, a woman lays facing us, propped-up on her elbow with her head turned to the right of the painting. The sun and a strip of green can be seen behind her, as well as a small line of sea walls, indicating the subject is laying on a beach. The woman wears a brown dress with a dark brown shawl wrapped around her shoulders. Her features are flattened and obscured, with her right blue eye just about visible. The limited colour palettes of both this work and Woman on a Beach reflect Mary Fedden’s belief that paintings should be predominantly one colour.
